Through the supreme sacrifices of the young students and people from all walks of life, Bangladesh finally achieved freedom after 16 years of fascist ruling. The brutal crackdown on protesters took away more than 1,581 lives and left at least 30,000 injured. Many of the injured are severely wounded, maimed or even crippled. While the Interim Government of Bangladesh is trying its best to rehabilitate the injured, it is far from being sufficient for a poor nation with limited resources.
Even three months after the student-led uprising in July, we see news about the demise of those injured victims. We believe many of these deaths could have been prevented had there been timely treatment. There are also reports from the field that many of these wounded people are still waiting for proper treatments, care and support.
Currently we are working with a nonprofit network, Visionary Voyage, in Bangladesh. This team consists of a group of architects & other professionals and is helping the injured victims of July revolution for their treatment and family support. We are committed to helping out five critically injured whose age ranges from 20 to 51 and are either students, small store clerks or pickup/van drivers and come from unprivileged or very low-income families. In most cases they are the sole earners of their families. Given their situation now, their families are also at the mercy of others. The cost of providing for a patient for the next 6 months is approximately $1,250. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to help out 20 such injured victims. With your help, we can change the lives of these patients for the better who have given up everything for the sake of freedom that all of us are enjoying now.
